Yesterday I received an email from a friend asking for help with choosing an mp3 player. The message comes with this attachment. He even asked if I know anything cheaper.

What can I say? Price is not everything. And price does not always indicate ‘value’. I really hate making a purchase decision with price as the main factor. Especially when it come to electronic devices.

What made me chose the iPod? (in random order)
- High capacity in reasonably sized form factor
- Sound Quality
- Build quality and look
- Ease of use (The click wheel interface is king!)
- Software
- The ‘cool’ factor

When all those things come together in a great package like the iPod, I (almost) forget about price.

Those fake iPods look very similar to the real thing and offer some more features such as FM tuner and it even comes with a wall charger! But - considering the poor build quality, the poor interface design and the lack of click wheel and iTunes, it’s not the same thing.

Even if you look at the price, a 1GB fake nano costs around 4,000+ Baht. The 2GB one should cost around 7,xxx if it were available. The “real” 2GB iPod nano costs US$ 199 = approx. 8,000 Baht. (Apple Thailand should lower the nano’s price!)

So, what is expensive now?

Apple has announced 1GB nano, for $149. I consider this a smart move to attract price-conscious customers to the nano as the competition gets tougher. The $149 price point is in line with the whole iPod family but still higher than some competing players of the same capacity (including the fake nanos shown here). It’s interesting to see how the market respond.

รูปแบบของรายการก็จะไม่ให้มีอะไรหวือหวา ไม่ต้องมีพิธีรีตอง ไม่ตั้งใจตัดต่อ ใส่ sound effect เตรียมมุข ท่องสคริปท์ให้ยุ่งยาก เป็นการมานั่งคุยกันในหัวข้อที่ตกลงกันไว้ก่อน อาจจะเป็นเรื่องการประกาศผลิตภัณฑ์ครั้งล่าสุดของ Apple ที่พึ่งผ่านไป หรือใครไปเจอบทความที่น่าสนใจ ก็เมลบอกให้ไปอ่านกัน แล้วเก็บความคันปากไว้ มานั่งคุยกันในรายการ

ตอนแรกเริ่มตั้งใจไว้ว่าจะใช้ชื่อ twin geeks พอจะเริ่มออกแบบโลโก้ก็ตั้งใจว่าจะทำอย่างไรให้ตัว T กับตัว G อยู่ด้วยกันแล้วสวย และยังต้องมีอะไรเกี่ยวข้องกับ Mac เฝ้ามองหา element อยู่พักใหญ่จนคิดถึงตัว place of interest sign (อ้างอิงชื่อจาก Character Pallete) หรือที่บางคนเรียกว่า “ยันต์” หรือ “clover” พูดง่ายๆ ก็คือเจ้าเครื่องหมายที่อยู่ข้าง Apple บนปุ่ม command นั่นเอง ว่าแล้วก็เลยพยายามหาทางคลี่คลายสัญลักษณ์นั้นให้เป็นตัว TG ให้ได้ แต่ด้วยรูปอักษรบังคับ เลยต้องออกห่างจากตัว clover ไปทุกทีๆ

ยิ่งเวลาเปิดตัวเว็บใกล้เข้ามา ยิ่งรู้สึกว่า เจ้าโลโก้ tG ที่ทำไว้ ดูไม่มีเค้าของ clover เอาเสียเลย พอลองก้มหน้าดูปุ่ม command ซึ่งกดอยุ่ทุกวี่ทุกวัน แล้วคิดว่า “มันจะเป็นตัวอะไรได้อีกที่ไม่ต้องดัดจนคดเคี้ยวนักนะ?” ทันใดนั้นก็เหมือนมีนิมิตมองเห็นตัว “dG” overlay อยู่บนปุ่ม ขยับปากกาไม่กี่หนก็ได้รูปร่างคร่าวๆ ของ logo ที่ดูดีกว่าตัวเดิม และยังมีเค้าของ clover ชัดจนใครเห็นก็รู้อีกต่างหาก

แล้วจะใช้ชื่ออะไรให้สอดคล้องกับตัว dG ล่ะ?

พอดีพักนี้ได้ยินคำว่า dual จาก Apple บ่อยเหลือเกิน ก็เลยปรึกษาใครต่อใครบน iChat แล้วคุยกันภายใน ตกลงว่าเราจะใช้ชื่อ dualGeek หลังจากนั้นจึงลงมือขัดเกลาโลโก้อยู่พักหนึ่งจนได้ออกมาเป็นตัวที่เห็นกันอยู่ในหน้าแรก และยังมีอีกหลายเวอร์ชั่น ครบถ้วนสำหรับการใช้งานในหลายขนาดและหลายพื้นที่
